The Edmund Burke Society is a movement dedicated to preserving and promoting the basic virtues of Western Christian Civilization — individual freedom; individual responsibility; a self-sacrificing love of country; and a willingness to work and pay one’s own way and not be a burden on others.  These virtues have made our civilization great.  Communism, socialism, and welfare-state Liberalism are tearing it apart.  The Edmund Burke Society stands for a regeneration of Western Civilization and firm action against all its enemies.

The E.B.S. is financed mainly through small donations from generous Canadians.  Straight Talk! is produced by voluntary labour.

Big Brother Is Here

By J. M. Harris

As the ranks of the unemployed swell, victims of the Liberal Government’s “war on inflation”, and working people everywhere groan under the latest increase in their taxes, a foul spectre stalks this nation, growing ever larger:  CREEPING MARXIST SOCIALISM.  It gained momentum with the birth of the New Democratic Party in the early sixties.  It continued to grow with the introduction of increased payroll deductions for pensions, then Medicare, and now, compulsory Unemployment Insurance for all.

Unfortunately, this is only the beginning.  There will be bloodsucker Benson’s tax increases to come shortly, followed by yet further increases to pay for the Liberals’ latest boondoggle:  a guaranteed income for all the freeloaders, moochers, and drones.  Of course, the fact that we are already working, on the average, three months a year for the Government for nothing (in order to pay income tax) doesn’t really matter, for soon it will be five or six months, as in Britain, where twenty years of creeping Marxism has acconplished so nuch for that once happy nation.

What Socialism Has Done For Britain

There, unemployment is the worst in thirty-one years, with 721,000 people out of work, 70,000 of them executives.  The second largest auto insurance firm, Vehicle and General Insurance, has followed Rolls-Royce into bankruptcy, leaving ten per cent of Britain’s drivers unprotected.  The nation’s largest company plans to cut back capital investment by twenty-five per cent.  Inflation is growing at the rate of nine per cent per annum.  The Ford Motor Co., where anarchy prevails at its strike-torn plant at Dagenham, will build a new $75 million factory … in West Germany.

The writer grew up with galloping socialism in Britain, and was able to observe, for many years, how socialist policies gradually destroyed the incentive and working backbone of almost everyone in the country.  The Socialist Government used the state industries to provide fat “jobs for the boys” to get votes.  In this way, and by lavish disbursement of handouts to every kind of freeloader and bum, they managed to prolong their stay in power and to compel the opposition parties to adopt their policies in part, if not in whole.  The result?  A quasi-Marxist state in all but name, and individual incentive destroyed to the point where economic anarchy is now threatening the entire nation.

The similarities between the onset of socialism in Britain and conditions in Canada today, are frightening.  We have the enlargement of state industry here in the Canada Development Corporation — a massive step toward Socialism.  We have the rapid development of the Welfare State, which stifles individual responsibility and incentive by looking after everyone (from the cradle to the grave) like a sloppy, doting grandmother.  This puts everyone on the moron level, for soon no one will have to worry about working anymore, or anything else, for that matter.

Soon to join a host of handouts is the Guaranteed Annual Wage — with — Oh joy!  guaranteed incomes for all (provided fron the federal treasury, of course).  According to Bruce West of the GLOBE & MAIL, to earn anything you can keep, or keep anything you own, will be a sin of the darkest order.  Any guy caught with full and unrestricted possession of a dollar he’s managed to acquire on his own, will be looked upon as a pariah and a menace to society.  If he’s wise, he’ll try to curry a little favour with the President of the local Society of Freeloaders, a man with plenty of political clobber and know-how.

Anyone else who remains unconvinced of the righteousness of the Government’s march down the Socialist path, will, of course, be straightened out by Information Canada, the propaganda machine set up with millions of tax dollars to inform us as to why we should hand over still more.

Time To Call A Halt

It is obvious that the time has come for every working and patriotic Canadian to put a stop to this nonsense while there is still time.  There is only one way to do this effectively and that is to FIGHT, for the point where creeping socialism ends and Marxism begins is a very nebulous one indeed.  Creeping socialism can become Communism.  It is no accident that the Trotskyites here call themselves the “Young Socialists”.  The Edmund Burke Society has already accomplished much to slow down the drift toward Socialism in Canada.  Our fight against Benson’s “Black Paper” has contributed to its being watered down.  Our fight against the Praxis Corporation and against Munro’s plan to increase welfare benefits has had results.

But the time has come to intensify the struggle against the spectre which threatens the peace and wellbeing of us all:  socialism.  In this struggle we can gain the support of many taxpayers and businessmen.  We can gain the support of true Conservatives across the nation, who are becoming increasingly frustrated by the lacklustre fight of their own party.  We can make Canada a bastion against Communism for years to come if we fight now to destroy the Marxist-Socialist blight which threatens our country!
